Verbal Habits of Deceptive People - Verbal Leaks 4: Speech Dis-fluencies. These account for the seemingly random and meaningless sounds, sighs, and pauses that fill our normal everyday speech. When people are confident about what they are saying, their statements are straightforward, such as; "I came home last night around eleven thirty", "She can be hard to work with, but we get along okay", "What is it you want to know?" Stressed or nervous subjects often try to slow their speech to gain more time to think, plan ahead. Silence makes most people uncomfortable, so subjects feel compelled to fill the pauses with sound. For example (some sentences); "Uh, I came home last night around eleven thirty", "She can be, like, hard to work with *sigh* but we get along okay", "*Speaker clears their throat* What is it you want to know?"
