People show ownership or demonstrate a territorial claim to objects or people by connecting their body to it. People do this with new cars for example; when a photo is taken of them they "claim ownership" over their new possession by leaning into it, against it, or putting their foot on it. Couples will put their arms around each other or hold hands in public to show other suitors they have a claim over that person.
