Guideline to Catching Liars by Examining Nonverbal and Verbal Behaviour - Interviewing to Detect Deception (17): If evidence is available, use it strategically. An interview can be limited if started straight away with (for example); "Your fingerprints were found on the briefcase in question," as it gives a guilty suspect time to fabricate a story consistent with the evidence. The Strategic Use of Evidence (SUE) technique involves 1) asking the suspect to describe their activities. It's more likely that truth tellers will mention the briefcase, and liars will omit it from their story. 2) Interviewer asks specific questions (in our example, still withholding the fingerprint evidence) about the briefcase. There's a high chance that the liar will deny touching the briefcase (contradicting the fingerprint evidence). 3) Reveal the evidence and ask the suspect to explain any inconsistencies and / or contradictions.
